You’ve done it, you’ve got your hands on Matchday Champions and you’re ready to build that starter squad into a trophy chasing powerhouse. Well, you’re in the right place, so read on.
In Matchday Champions, every new player starts with minimum of 16 players. That’s enough for a full starting 11 and 5 on the bench. You should have one or two players with an OVR over 70, where we start to see the top quality players appearing. Tinker with your current setup and they will see you through more than a handful of victories as you head up through the Divisions.
But how can you get more footballer cards, with higher OVR ratings? What’s the best way to improve your squad, as fast as possible?
Players in their correct positions play better. Yes it might be cool to try a field full of Mbappés, but any card in the wrong section of the pitch will incur an OVR penalty in the matches.
Cards will show you their position, for example GK for Goalkeeper. That’s an obvious one, but how about RM and LB? Here’s a handy image in case you aren’t familiar with football terms:
Bonus Tip - If you’re not sure who is best in a particular position - use the Quick Swap button and the game will automatically select the most suitable player.
Bonus Tip 2 - If you select and drag a player card on the pitch, you’ll see if a slot is not suitable for it.
So what to do to get good, quickly? Firstly, there’s the Chelsea method. Crack out the chequebook and buy yourself 8 goalkeepers. Jokes aside, it’s a valid tactic, but beyond the reach of many of us. So before you start loading up on shop bought gems in the the Matchday store, let’s get smart.
That’s right, from humble Level 1 beginnings, club is destined for more. As you play matches, you’ll notice that you also gain supporters. Supporters are the key to levelling up, and each level means coins (and gems!) to fill your war chest. Uptown top ranking!
The most consistent way to load up on coins and gems in Matchday Champions. Daily Drills range from simply claiming your daily login bonus, to scoring a certain number of goals. Achieve them all in a day and get a further bonus!
Daily deals offers you a selection of players ready to jump in and make a difference on your squad. You’ll find Daily Deals in the Shop section of both Matchday Champions and the Matchday website. The players rotate every 24 hours, and you’ll notice that the some of the players offered will scale as your Team OVR increases. Our advice is to save up your coins and gems, then grab a player who offers a big upgrade in one of the main slots - GK, DEF, MID and ATK. One world class player in each of those and you should see the goals and wins rolling in.
While it’s advisable to have a good selection of subs to rotate, you may be unlikely to use your 4th reserve goalkeeper. Sell these in the shop and use the coins earned towards new players with higher OVRs.
