Life @ Matchday Part 2: The TV & Film Edition

Back by popular demand! Welcome to the second part of our Life @ Matchday series! Despite there being a total deluge of football on our screens every night for the past month, some of our employees somehow find the time to watch shows that are not football. What content fuels the imaginations of our team members when they’re not silently praying for England to win? Grab that remote and press the Netflix button with some behind the scenes inspiration.

Joan - Our Social Media autuer.

Joan’s latest obsession is Baby Reindeer. “It left my brain in shambles lol.” Was all we were able to squeeze out of him, and for good reason. This intense series dips into a harrowing real-life experience with a stalker. An exploration of fear, vulnerability, and the human psyche that leaves a lasting impression (much like supporting the England team).

This is a seriously good show, but it's not what anyone could call 'light viewing'.

Cristiano - AI Team, R&D

Cristiano, our man in Malta, player of Pokemon games and unashamed Nickelback fan (correction, Linkin Park), has been enjoying Criminal Minds. This long-running TV series delves into the work of FBI profilers who analyse the country’s most twisted criminal minds (who happen to enjoy the same music apparently).

Look at them, judging your music tastes.

Sara - UI Artist

Our accidental 8k’er (”I came to watch a race and there was an 8k just starting so I just, joined in.”) Sara has been on an emotional journey with Breaking Bad. She’s “surprised by the love-hate relationship I ended up having with the characters.” This critically acclaimed series follows the transformation of Malcolm in the Middle’s Dad into a methamphetamine manufacturer (spoilers!).

Believe it or not, this look was pretty popular in the 90s.

Josh - Biz Dev and Partnerships

He lives football, he breathes football, and when he’s not watching football, he’s watching TV shows about football. Josh recently enjoyed Captains of the World. He found it an “interesting recap of WC2022, sharing new angles to each team.” Save it in your favourites and look it up again in 2 years just before the next World Cup which England are likely favourites to win now.

Once Josh jumped on the football hype train, he decided he would never get off.

Kareem - Community Operations Specialist (Organisation Overlord)

Kareem finds comfort in rotating between some classic sitcoms. He’s been enjoying Brooklyn 99, Friends, Two and a Half Men, and How I Met Your Mother. It is rumoured that because Kareem’s day to day life is so packed with adrenaline highs, watching these middle of the road shows is his way of winding down.

Look at all those smiles. Good times. Good times were had by most.

Paul - Design Lead

Presumably because he takes pleasure at observing the downfall of others, Paul has been captivated by Fiasco, a French cringe comedy series about a disastrous film production where “everything went oh so wrong.” He’s also been rewatching Schitt’s Creek because it’s “so good,” blending humour and heartfelt moments in equal measures. Pro Tip - pretty much everything Paul likes is good, so these are going on the list.

Tom - Senior Game Designer

Tom is a big fan of Dune Part II, calling it perhaps his “favourite Sci-Fi series,” encompassing both the movies and the books. He was also “surprisingly impressed” by House of the Dragon, which exceeded his expectations and added new depth to the fantasy genre. When pressed on what he meant by that, he exclaimed “I just love dragons ok?” and slammed the phone down.

Honestly though, who doesn't love dragons?

Matteo - GS Backend Lead

Matteo, the tranquil centre of calm of the Matchday universe, has been engrossed in Slow Horses. A unique take on the spy thriller genre. He finds it refreshingly different from the typical James Bond narratives. Absolutely crammed with some of the richest British acting talent, if Matteo likes it then it’s probably incredible.

George Omondi - Communications Intern

One of our newest recruits to Team Matchday, George has been meaning to rewatch Snowfall, calling it a “classic show of our times. Snowfall showcases “the FBI involvement in the crack epidemic that plagued the streets of LA to fund the Nicaraguan war.” Lighthearted it isn’t, but we’re sure if cosmopolitan George says it’s worth watching twice, it’s definitely worth watching at least once.

And that’s what’s been lighting up a handful of our screens here at Matchday. Does it reveal more about the inner workings of the team? Why not let us know what you’re watching - we’re always happy to welcome newcomers to our Discord community. And stay tuned for more insights into the lives of the Matchday team!
