Copa America 2024: Brazil, Argentina, USA! Key Players, Predictions, Highlights and more!

The Copa America 2024 has kicked off in the U S of A! Running in parallel almost with Euro 2024, football fans around the world are set in for a summer of football, football and more football. We've seen some opening matches already, and there's plenty more to come.

Read on as we narrow it down to five powerhouse nations, including hosts USA, each bringing unique talent and ambition to the tournament. We’ve also picked out key players, difference makers, for you to keep an eye on during the tournament.

Argentina

Argentina, fresh off their World Cup triumph, aims to add another Copa America to their trophy cabinet. The squad boasts a blend of experience and emerging talent.

Lionel Messi:

The maestro is back and the world wants more, more more. The undisputed Goat is ready to weave his magic and lead Argentina to glory (one last time?). After cementing that elusive World Cup victory, he has nothing left to prove. Will he make a difference? Always.

Lautaro Martinez:

The goal machine whose lethal finishing and physicality make him Argentina’s spearhead. Watch out for his clinical strikes and powerful headers as he hunts for the Golden Boot.

Brazil

Despite Ronaldinho’s dramatic social posts, the flair, the yellow shirts, the ability of the boys from Brazil are always a threat on the international stage. This year, no Neymar (injury), no Casemiro, but the Real Madrid trio of Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Endrick are ready to go. Despite the naysayers, it would not be a surprise if they went all the way.

Vinicius Jr:

The no nonsense striking sensation with blistering pace and dazzling dribbles. His ability to score and assist makes him Brazil’s main man, set to fill Neymar’s shoes with style.

Rodrygo:

The rising star with silky skills and versatility, Rodrygo is a joy to watch. Whether scoring or setting up goals, he’s a crucial part of Brazil’s attack.

Colombia

Colombia is known for its dynamic and resilient play, ready to challenge any opponent with their mix of experienced stars and young guns.

Luis Diaz:

Liverpool lad Diaz has dazzled the Premiership with his explosive speed and bag of tricks, and hopes to continue that in the Copa America. His talent in frton of goal will be crucial for Colombia.

Jefferson Lerma:

The Palace enforcer with defensive skills vital for Colombia’s midfield. His ability to disrupt opponents and add some solidity to the midfield and back-line will be key.

Uruguay

Uruguay’s stars remind us of Portugal’s stature in Europe. Always dangerous, always ready to snatch victories. Their mix of seasoned vets and new kids is not what you want to see when you line up in the first round.

Federico Valverde:

The Real Madrid powerhouse who can run for days. His energy alone makes him a key player for Uruguay. He is a proper two way player, able to drive forward and contribute defensively. Any team with Valverde in it is going to be tough.

Darwin Nunez:

Another Liverpudlian legend, the predator that is Darwin Nunez has the goal-scoring instincts to make him Uruguay’s main threat. His ability to finish from any position (except, sometimes, at point blank range...) will be crucial for their success. Expect to be impressed!

United States

We’ve been laughing for too long at the country where they call the sport kickball (may not be true). Hear us out here, yes their coach has shades of Southgate, but they are hosts, they have real Euro level talent in the squad, and they’ve bashed in Bolivia in their opening game. The United States have a massive opportunity to showcase their growth and compete with the best in the world. They need belief, some luck and some home support sure, but their talented squad is not just here for the party.

Christian Pulisic:

Captain America is set to lead the USMNT with a wholesome combo of creativity and drive. Pulisic’s ability to change games with a single moment of brilliance is there. He’s played around the world. He’s good enough to compete. Ain’t nothing to it, but to do it!

Weston McKennie:

Milan’s midfield engine whose box-to-box prowess and defensive grit are vital for the USMNT. His energy and goal-scoring ability from midfield can turn the tide in big games.

As ever, we’ve missed off some potential winners. Mexico snatched a win against Jamaica and despite Chile’s opening draw, you just never know. As with Ronaldo over in the Euros, Messi in Copa America could be his international swan song tournament. Drink it in, it can’t last forever. We’ve had a particularly intense one already between Venezuela and Ecuador with 9 (nine!) yellow cards. We hope the tournament provides some real bangers, fewer own goals than the Euros, and many magical moments. Stay tuned for more updates and in-depth coverage as we follow the highs and lows of Copa America 2024. Even better, come and discuss it with us on Discord! Who do you think will be champs?
