2023 Unwrapped: Matchday's Leap into Tomorrow

2023 has been a transformative year for Matchday. From significant milestones to embracing new challenges, the last 12 months have been nothing short of extraordinary. We talked with our Chief Gaming Officer, Sebastien De Halleux, and our CEO, Derrick Ko, about their thoughts on this remarkable year.

Achievements and Milestones

This year has been about growth, innovation, and community. We've expanded our game team from zero to 30, bringing in exceptional talent from industry giants across Europe. But beyond numbers, the clearest achievement is the quality and passion each member has brought to Matchday.

One particularly important achievement has been the integration of women alongside men in our card inventory and gameplay, reflecting the real spirit of football. Our community has responded enthusiastically, with 2 million new members joining during the FWWC23.

The development and release of Prorata and the Q4 introduction of Matchday Mobile's first internal playable have been key milestones, marking our commitment to innovative gameplay and immersive experiences.

Looking Ahead to 2024

As we look to the future, AI and blockchain technologies remain at the forefront of our development strategy. These technologies are not just tools; they are catalysts for creating a gaming experience that's unique, personal, and ever-evolving.

The upcoming launch of Matchday Mobile is a thrilling prospect. More than just a release, it's an invitation to our community to engage with us, share feedback, and participate in the development process. This collaborative approach is what will give Matchday Mobile a real head start.

Team Dynamics and Global Presence

Our success as a remote-first startup lies in our diversity and the commitment of the team to meet regularly in Barcelona. These meet-ups are crucial for fostering creativity, collaboration, and maintaining the team spirit that defines Matchday.

Our team is a vibrant tapestry of cultures and expertise, representing 20 different countries. Led creatively by Paul Vauvrey (Design Lead) and Matt Jones (Art Director), our team includes talents from EA, SI, King, Scopely, and more. This global presence not only enriches our company culture but also reflects the universal appeal of football. Personal Reflections

Seb: "Collaborating with a team of such calibre and interacting with top athletes like Alexia Putellas has been a personal highlight. These experiences underscore the joy and impact of our work."

Derrick: "The football world is full of surprises, like Santos's relegation this year after 111 years in the top flight. It's these moments that remind us of the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the sport we're so passionate about."
